Cute! I was brought up a vegetarian (dairy-no eggs) and I remember not being able to eat the chocolate cake at a birthday party when I was in preschool. I asked my mom and she said no-there are eggs. I wasn't at all upset although I remember my vegetarian friend (our parents were both Hare Krishnas) screaming until his mother relented. I'm 24 and I have never thought about eating meat nor eggs (although I will eat cake with eggs sometimes-don't tell my mom!) and I am going vegan. So your daughter doesn't have to be rebellious!
Sara, my younger brother was raised just like me and he now eats animals without qualms. His excuse is that he is lazy and doesn't care enough. I still have hope that he will get older and wiser though!

Susan, I feel the best bet with soy foods, just like any other food, is to eat it mostly in it's whole state. Tofu, tempeh, cooked soybeans are all great. It's when it starts getting overly processed that you can run into problems.

Now, I also think it's okay to occasionally eat processed soy foods, like faux meats and such, but think of them as a treat.

If thyroid problems run in your family or you already have a thyroid problem then consume less soy. But be aware there is a lot of soy in packaged food, so read labels. My mom has hypothyroidism and is careful with her consumption.

I stopped eating meat and dairy on 1 Jan after reading the book "Skinny Bitch" over the holidays. So now I'm eating a lot of soy-based substitutes and I'm coming across articles and commentary that eating too much soy can cause severe health problems (hyperthyroidism, etc). Can anyone shed some light onto this? I'd rather make adjustments to my diet now than later after I've developed some terrible health problems. Thanks.

wow. reading these comments is amazing to me. i've been vegan for ten years. i think what many vegans need to learn is to be compassionate to all animals, including humans. i am reluctant to tell people i am vegan because of the attitudes of so many vegans out there. don't get me wrong, meat eaters can irk me like no other with their self righteous attitudes and passive aggressive (or just aggressive) questions. but i would love to believe that a person who follows a diet that is based on compassion, would have compassion for people as well, and maybe a little bit of understanding. to me, eating animals is unthinkable but i love many many meat eaters out there and would never question their choices just as i hope they would never question or disrespect mine.

We detest RR, but sometimes watch her show for laughs, or is that indigestion? I'm sorry to burst your bubble, Laura, but fast food looks healthy next to Ray's crap. She uses too many fatty meats and butter, too many chemical laden store-bought ingredients and way too much pasta. Not only is her example of poor kitchen hygiene dangerous to beginner cooks (probably the only people who don't see through her atrocious cooking), but her use of EVOO at high temperatures also poses a cancer risk. Why would you overheat an oil whose average cost is nearly $20/bottle? Ridiculous! I guess when you're so rich you could care less about how real people live. Real chefs know you reserve EVOO for salads, dipping and other unheated uses. That's why they make olive oil in so many grades, so you can use the right one for the right purpose. I'm completely fed up with talent-challenged morons getting so much hype. Her nervous tics could drive one to madness.

I agree, Jon, even though it wasn't the most gruesome, the photo of the pig looking at the camera was one of the most heart wrenching. He looks so scared and confused.

And the lambs looking at the skinned sheep is hauntingly allegorical. Isn't there a saying about lambs led to slaughter?

Sorry for the double post, but I just thought of this. I found out that Safeway stocks a vegetarian chorizo (it's not Soyrizo brand, but it's about as good) in their produce section. The Randall's grocery store chain is owned by Safeway, and since Randall's are about as common as grackles in Texas (and I should know, I used to live in Austin), I don't think you'll have too much trouble finding one. Anyway, it's a fairly safe bet the two chains stock about the same product.

This is a really old discussion, but hopefully, Lisa, you thought to subscribe to the comment feed so you'll get this. At any rate, I'd suggest you check out Central Market. If I'm not mistaken, there's one in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area. They're one of those foofy, high-end joints. I don't know if you ever made it into a Trader Joe's while you were in SoCal, but Central Market is like that but way bigger. Hope that helps you or anyone else who might stumble upon this thread.

It is so tough to think what some animals have to go through in their life. To actually have to sit there and watch their family and friends get slaughtered is horrible. I equate it to the Natzis.
