I got toward the end of this post and was thinking, "Hm, what a fun, useful read." But then at the last minute, when you quoted Dead Prez? That just turned everything into awesome :)

Peta sells an animal rescue car kit for $7.95, I got one for my sister who will be driving around Portland soon.
https://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=CA150

that's a great idea to add the local shelter numbers and instructions for handling different animals(I never know what to do with birds!).

Love it! Can I make one supplemental suggestion? Listen to the Food for Thought podcast http://feeds.feedburner.com/VegetarianFoodForThought. Talk about kick ass! Made me a better vegan, for sure. Amazing stuff on there. Anyway - love your ideas. (-:

Excellent reminder post on how it takes more than just not eating animal products, or wearing them to be a good vegan.

The animal care kit is such a great idea! Last fall I was running and found the tiniest baby animal - a mole, probably - and it was such a baby that it was happiest curled up in my hand. A sure sign it was not capable of defending itself - it should have been trying to get away from me!

I had no idea what to do, but thanks to my cell phone and some friends who got online and found some phone numbers, I was able to bring the baby (in my emptied out queen bee clutch) to the wildlife rescue place. That made me think that I should always have such numbers at hand, but I didn't do anything about it. So now I'm motivated to print out the info to have with me all the time! I'll program some numbers in my cell too.

Oh, and for the vegan gift basket, something I've done which has gone over really well was to print out some of my favorite recipes and cut them down to fit into a flip photo frame. Makes for an easy cookbook with its own stand, and with each recipe protected from splatters. This is also a great way to appear to be creative when you're not very creative in reality! :D

Inspirational! Thanks for this post Ryan!
