“New Jersey has warned squirrel hunters near a toxic waste dump about consuming the critters because they could be contaminated with lead.” Squirrel hunters? Now there are some manly men for you.
I abhor hunting and any other form of cruelty to animals, but I have to admit, my first thought at reading the phrase “squirrel hunting” was that whoever does that must live in extreme poverty and hunger. “Roadkill” type food has been an undeniable fact of life for some of the poorest Americans for a long time. Again, this doesn’t excuse killing animals, but I don’t hold squirrel hunting (possibly for subsistence) on the same level as “sport” hunting or that kind of B.S.
(Of course I could be completely off the mark, and need to look into this issue more!)
