After reading it for the fourth time, Huyen is definitely right -- it's saying that all the frozen items except for the pizza have eggs. So the pizza's safe and vegan.

The answer is a very poorly phrased sentence but I read and re-read Tofutti's question #9 and I think that it is saying that the Pizza Pizzaz *IS* vegan but not made with egg whites.

Here's the exact quote from their website:

"No, not all of our products are totally vegan. Although all of our frozen dessert and cheese (except smoked salmon Better Than Cream Cheese) products are completely vegan, all of our frozen food entrees (except our Pizza Pizzaz) and all four of our cookies do contain egg whites. Of course, every product that uses egg whites will have it clearly listed in the ingredients. We never use whole eggs, as we are always cholesterol free."

Also in terms of dairy here's the answer on their website:

"All of our products are certified Kosher Parve, which means that none of our products ever contain any dairy whatsoever. This means no milk byproducts either, such as casein, whey, or skim milk powder. In order to make certain that there is no dairy in a product, always look for a Kosher Parve symbol. That symbol certifies that the product is completely dairy/casein free."

and Cosmos Vegan Shoppe carries it and has a list of ingredients:

Ingredients: Unbleached wheat flour, water, vegan mozzarella (Water, may contain one or more of the following oils: soy, corn, or palm. Tofu, soy protein, carrageenan, maltodextrin, vinegar, corn starch, calcium phosphate, potato flakes, salt, potassium phosphate, non-dairy lactic acid, adipic acid, soy, natural colors and potassium sorbate), partially hydrogenated soybean oil, tofu, soy protein, crushed tomatoes, potato flakes, maltodextrin, corn starch, vinegar, adipic acid, sodium phosphate, soy lecithin, natural vegan flavors, sugar (now non-bone char!), salt, yeast, spices, garlic powder.Allergen Alert- contains soy and wheat

Wow... how weird. I doubt it's casein because they're using their own "Better than mozzarella cheese" which is itself vegan (check the cheese slices ingredients). I wonder if it's something in the "natural flavors"...

I'll try and get to the bottom of this.

Since yours is the first result on google for "tofutti vegan pizza", I feel compelled to comment:

Tofutti Pizza Pizzaz is NOT vegan.

Stop buying it.

See: http://www.tofutti.com/dyk-faq.shtml
It's question #9 "Are all tofutti products vegan?"
The answer specifically lists this product as non-vegan. Presumably, they're using caisen or something in the cheese (the ingredients in which are not listed on the package). I was really dismayed to find this out... especially since I have one of the damn things in the oven right now /cry

UUUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!! EEEEWWWWWWW!!!! I just read on your site that Tofutti is using "man milk" in their cheese!!!! Worse yet, a lot of vegan organizations are endorsing it!!! Either I'm gullible and you're playing a sick joke on us or it's true! Sorry boys and girls, it isn't vegan in my book. If I don't drink milk from a cow, why the hell would I ingest it from a human? A lot of leaders in the movement say that striving for perfection and purity in veganism is futile but you know, I'm a micromanager at heart. I intend to boycott all Tofutti products because of this. This is almost as bad as lab grown meat----which, by the way, ISN'T VEGAN EITHER!!!!!!

The pizza reminds me of the little frozen Mr. P's pizzas or the Mama Celeste ones that you can buy in most grocery stores. It really bothers me that that continue to put out items with hydrogenated fats and I was happy when they came out with cream cheese that doesn't have them. I have been vegan for a year and four months. Part of that process for me was cutting down on processed foods and meat analogs, but this is a good, fast snack once in a while. I hesitate to call it lunch or even dinner. The first time I tried it I got a little weirded out by how real it tasted.

Also, since I am new at this, can anyone give me some tips?

Yeah, Tofutti bugs me. They totally don't cater to vegans, their stuff just "happens to be." They use bone-char refined sugar (except in the non-hydrogenated stuffs), and they make that real salmon cream cheese.

I think the Tofutti company is targeting people who are allergic to milk and not vegans. Their product is very good and I agree with the question why are they putting out 2 products, one with hydrogenated oils and one with out. Get rid of the bad oils that contradict the product. Milk allergy sufferers will buy the more healthy version if that is the only choice while vegans and other true health conscience consumers will not buy products with hydrogenated oils. I have found that the healthier version is harder to find and recently was told that the company is out of stock. Let's get together and ask the company to step up to the demand. Let's ask the regular supermarkets to carry it. I have made the tradiational spinach dip with it and vegan mayo and the non vegans eat it up too!

Mike, I'll have to try your crumble tofu + olive oil + salt + basil as a cheese substitute on pizza. I'm vegetarian right now, but anything that brings me closer to vegan is good.

I hate that so many Tofutti products have high fructose corn syrup, which I've been trying to avoid for a year-and-a-half or so now. I no longer drink conventional soda (last time I tried, it was just vile). But it means no more Tofutti Cuties 'cause they have HFCS. :(

Usually when I make pizza, I use crumbled tofu mixed with a little olive oil, salt, and basil as the "cheese substitute". It's very good. I've tried using Vegan Gourmet's mozarella, too, and it makes a great pizza, but one which is significantly heavier and less guilt-free.

I prefer to buy from Vegan Gourmet, because they're clearly targetting the vegan market, whereas Tofutti produces fake cream cheese with real salmon in it (as far as I can tell). Vegans don't seem to be their focus. Plus they use a lot of hydrogenated fat, as others have pointed out.
