For vegetarian moms-to-be
MSNBC has a good article titled Menu help for vegetarian moms-to-be: Tips for getting in all the proper nutrients. While it’s only a brief overview, it’s still a good read.
One thing that puzzled me, though, was recommendation that pregnant vegetarian/vegan women “avoid soft cheese or raw seafood, which can be possible sources of a potentially harmful type of Listeria bacterium.” Seafood? Since when was that vegetarian or vegan? Otherwise, this seems to be a well-informed and researched article.

It never ceases to amaze me how people don’t consider fish or shellfish to be meat. That being said, we don’t call ourselves Meat-Avoiders (leaving it open to misinterpretation of the term “meat”). We’re vegetarians which implies vegetation. Last I knew, oysters weren’t exactly foliage.
Okay… I’m climbing off my soapbox, now.
I got a book for Christmas called “Being Vegetarian for Dummies” and it discussed “partial vegetarians,” and “pesco vegetarians” (fish only). Still, it’s not “full-fledged” vegetarianism, so the article title is a tad misleading.
(Hey Jen, soap boxes are good)!! ;-)
