Uniq fruit kinda’ Ugli

I picked up a fruit I had never heard of the other day from, of all places, Giant. It’s called a “Uniq Fruit,” but is supposedly better known as an Ugli Tangelo. It’s basically a natural combination of a tangerine and a grapefruit and can be eaten like either: peeled (like a tangerine or cut open (like a grapefruit). It grows primarily (solely?) in Jamaica.

The taste wasn’t quite as strong as I would have expected, but it was still very good. The slight blandness may be because it was from Giant (their pomegranates during the prime season were absolutely tasteless).

Interesting! I come from a family of Texas Valley citrus growers.

Anyone with information on purchasing the tree. I’d like to try this at home where we grow lime, lemon and calamondin.

Found it at a Gelson’s store in Pasadena, CA. Not very impressed but worth trying. It was $2,50 approx. a pound.

I first tried Ugli fruit years ago and look for them every chance I get! The growing season is from December to April so it’s a very limited, seasonal fruit. I recently picked up a bunch at $1.99 each at a New Jersey Stop and Shop. Just remember: the smaller, the sweeter.

In the Pacific Northwest (Seattle area), you can get them at just about any Safeway store. Good luck!
